American-born Wolfgang and his Swedish-born wife Margaretha Ley founded their design house in Munich in 1976,
naming it Escada after a racehorse they won money betting on.
They began as a sportswear designer, and in the early 1980s expanded broadly in womenswear,
becoming especially well-known for their knitwear, as well as opening stores in the United States and Asia.
Escada's showy yet elegantly chic designs made the company one of the most prominent design houses of the 1980s,
and it made newspaper headlines around the world when the company became publicly traded in 1986.
Margaretha Ley was the chief designer until she died in 1992.
In 1995, Todd Oldham was brought in as a creative consultant,
and he successfully led expansions of several of their lines.
Damiano Biella, formerly of Carolina Herrera and Valentino, became the new creative director of the firm.
Escada filed bankruptcy in 2009, and was sold to Meghan Mittal
(daughter-in-law of billionaire steelmaker Lakshmi Mittal).
Since the reorganization of the ESCADA companies, their clothing has taken a great turn.
It has returned in style and taste to its original classics and Citified Chic
ESCADA is a household name in DESIGNER Fashion, Tailoring and Sportswear.
In recent years they have added great glamour to their tradition by making Couture Evening Wear.
The ESCADA COUTURE Label is the grandest and most expensive clothing that they manufacture.
Even my husband, (the worst dressed man in America) knows ESCADA!
